Narrative & Lip Syncing Workshop

What have you learnt from completing the narrative and editing workshops about how to film a music video?

I have learnt that if your given a specific narrative and then put it with the song, the song can change the meaning of the song. For example, the narrative we had for our task was that a boy/girl was heartbroken that boy/girl had left, and our group did it more in the sense of a friendship rather than a relationship narrative. However we added the song, 'We Are Never Getting Back Together' by Taylor Swift, it changed the meaning of the video so it became a lesbian couple going through a breakup instead of a friendship. So I've learnt that you have to think about the narrative a bit more and make sure that it fits with the song and it makes it feel more like music video.

Find out what 2 people in the class thought about your final outcome. What did they understand from your narrative?

I asked two people, Hannah Jones, Patrick Hall and Steph Watkins and they all said that the final outcome was good however the scenario we intended to show didn't come across and it made it look more like a lesbian couple breaking up rather than a friendship.

How did our narrative fit with the song?

I think the song worked well with the video, despite the video giving off a different meaning. I think the video changed the meaning and it still fit, so it still made sense to the audience watching it.

If people were confused about what was happening, why was this?

I think people got the different meaning from the video because we didn't make it clear enough that the two girls in the video were best friends. I think if we had made that more obvious, then people would have got the intended meaning that we wanted to give off.

How far did you prove/disprove Andrew Goodwin's theory?

I think the video we shot combined with the narrative and the song, does proved Andrew Goodwin' theory as the song enhanced the meaning of the video, even if it wasn't the meaning we wanted to give off.
